Young child learning piano with adult help

What Age Should My Child Start Piano Lessons?

February 25, 20263 min read

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents in Welwyn Garden City: "Is my child old enough to start piano lessons?" The answer depends on a few things — but the short version is that most children are ready earlier than parents expect.

The Sweet Spot: Ages 5–7

Most piano teachers, including us at Handside Music, find that age 5 to 7 is the ideal starting point for most children. Here's why:

  • Children this age are naturally receptive to learning new skills

  • Their fine motor skills are developed enough to manage the keyboard

  • They can follow simple instructions and respond well to structured learning

  • The habits and ear training they develop now stick with them for life

Starting young doesn't mean pushing a child to be a prodigy. It means giving them a head start in a relaxed, enjoyable way.

Can a 4-Year-Old Start Piano?

Some children are ready at 4, but it's less common. At this age, the key question isn't musical ability — it's whether they can sit and focus for 20–30 minutes at a time, and whether they can distinguish between their left and right hands reliably. If the answer is yes, it's worth a conversation with a teacher.

However, in our experience, 90% of the time it's best to wait until a child is in Year One before starting. There is a big difference between even 4 ½ and 5 years old it turns out!

What About Starting Later — Ages 8, 9 or 10?

Absolutely fine. Children who start at 8 or 9 often progress faster in the early stages because they have stronger reading skills and can absorb theory more quickly. The window for learning piano doesn't close in childhood — but starting before age 10 does give children a meaningful head start.

Signs Your Child Might Be Ready

  • They show interest in music — singing, dancing, or asking about instruments

  • They can concentrate on a single activity for 20+ minutes

  • They respond to simple instructions without constant reminders

  • They can count to four reliably

You don't need all of these, and musical interest matters most. A child who loves music but struggles to sit still will often surprise you once the piano is in front of them.

What If My Child Is Nervous?

This is completely normal. A first lesson should feel fun and exploratory, not like a test. Good teachers build confidence gradually, and most nervous children relax within the first two or three sessions.

The Bottom Line

If your child is 5 or older and shows any interest in music, the answer is almost certainly: now is a great time to start.
