Piano Lessons for Adults

Because you also deserve to play

As adults, we often feel learning days are behind us.

There's no time, energy or money to spare.

And parents? "If it's not for the children, we can't do it."

We beg to differ.

Take time for piano. Take time for you.

And become the person you want your children to be.

What Adult Students Are Saying

We've started working with Michael and Jennifer about a year ago and not only they helped my daughter advance very quickly, they also sparked my passion for piano and music theory too! Their kind and diciplened approach helps us progress, and learn new skills.

I was considering taking online lessons or using an app but honestly, it's not about playing the notes correctly. It is learning deeper about music, getting individualized feedback such as how hard or soft you are pressing the keys, and getting tailored lessons for your goals and music taste.

We couldn't have been happier and would 100% recommend them to anyone interested in music without a second thought.

We have been learning with Michael for over a year now and my young son has progressed from never playing piano before to playing with two hands and being able to sight-read simpler pieces.

More recently, I have started taking piano lessons with Michael too. He is supporting me with my study for the ABRSM Grade 2 exam and he always has insightful suggestions for how I can improve my playing to give the piece more depth or emotion, for example. I trust Michael to help me pass the grade exams at Grade 2 and beyond.

My son and I both enjoy our lessons with Michael and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others, whether they are looking for tuition for their child or for themselves.

Are you wanting to feed your passion -

but afraid it's too late for you?

Too many adults believe "it's too late" or "I don't have enough talent"

And parents? They believe "I can't spend time or money for myself"

Believe "It's too late for me - should have started as a child"

"Adults learn slowly"

"I don't want to learn kids' songs even though I'm just starting"

"I don't deserve this"

Handside Music helps you break through mind blocks in the simplest way: by you experiencing success!

When you feel and hear yourself playing real pieces you know and love, the myths start to fade. And however simple the music, your confidence starts to build.

We give you a clear structured path, and break it down into manageable steps.

Day by day, week by week, we'll get you from your first steps to musical mastery.

It's never "too late" to start piano

As adults, we often feel learning days are behind us.

As parents, we also feel: there's no time, no energy to spare; or " I can't spend time or money on myself, only my kids."

We beg to differ.

We totally get it. Time is short. Time for parents? Really short!

But in your heart of hearts, you know this sad truth: by denying yourself time to do what you really care about, you build up little resentments towards your kids. Why should they be the only ones to have all those expensive lessons?

Well, why indeed?

Truth? Building resentments towards anyone is bad for you but towards your own kids it's toxic!

The great news is you can square the circle!

We believe that you can 100% justify nurturing your own ability. Simples: you're going to be a happier person (and a happier mum or dad!)

AND...if you are a parent, what better example to set your kids than playing the piano?

You're modelling amazing character traits: Perseverance. Consistency. Courage. And you're introducing them to the beauty and fun of the world of music.

Learning piano as a parent is the opposite of indulgence - it's modelling all the things any parent could want for their kids.

We believe that learning as an adult is not an indulgence; it's your nature. Don't block it. Nurture it.

Piano time - your time.

Because you’re more than “just mum.” or "Dad". Or "Grandparent". You're more than "employee" or "girlfriend".
You deserve your time. You deserve piano time.

Adult Piano Lesson Myths

Like many adults we've worked with (maybe you too), many feel bad about their playing...

They often assume that they will learn much slower than children and that it's too late to start or to improve.

If they are parents, they also feel guilty about spending time (and a little money) on themselves when they feel it should all go on their children.

Happily, we know from experience that these things are -provably - wrong!

Adults, in our collective experience, often, indeed usually, learn much faster than children. They are usually highly motivated. They know how to focus. They know how to learn. And they know how to make sense of new notation.

As for feeling guilty - we've had the privilege of watching ever more of our child students' parents start lessons with us. Nothing sends the signal stronger to your child that music is important than playing yourself. And if you put yourself on the line a little and are brave enough to be a learner again, you are an amazing role model for your little one.

We obviously teach adults who are not parents as well (Michael and Jennifer only just changed category themselves recently!)

Come and try it for yourself - then you'll know for sure!

Things to Know About
Piano Lessons for Adults

Adults can learn music fast - usually faster than children!

Trust us - we have decades of experience teaching children. Most adults have a hang-up about how fast they'll learn. But the reality is that most adults learn much faster than children. They are motivated. They know how to focus. They know how to learn new skills.

Am I too old to learn the piano?

There is no upper age limit to piano playing or learning from scratch. We've had very successful students start in their 70s! Besides which, it's a proven way to keep your brain sharp - it's actually a very wise idea to play the piano as a senior!

Being able to read sheet music is not a requirement to play the piano, there are other ways to learn and master the instrument.

Being able to read sheet music can be beneficial for pianists, but it is not an absolute requirement for learning piano. Some students may prefer to learn by listening or using chord charts and other materials that don't involve sheet music reading. However, learning to read sheet music can enhance a student's understanding of music and expand their repertoire. Many piano teachers will often teach sheet music reading alongside other piano-playing skills and it can be developed gradually as the student progresses.

How long it takes to learn to play the piano varies from person to person.

The time it takes to learn piano can differ among individuals. Some may learn the fundamentals, such as posture and hand positioning, in a few months while it might take others longer.

With consistent practice and quality instruction, anyone can improve their piano playing skills over time. It may take some time to learn more challenging songs, but with dedication and practice, progress is pretty much guaranteed!

The great news is that the piano is VERY responsive to regular work. If you practise regularly, even small amounts, you WILL make progress!

Creating a consistent practice schedule is the simple key to success

Adults (especially parents!) often are very short of time. They run around earning a living and looking after others (children, grandchildren or ageing parents, to name but the most common). That's not a problem - just carve out 10 minutes a day for yourself and you can make real progress quickly.

Musical talent is not a requirement for playing the piano.

You don't have to be naturally talented to learn how to play the piano. While some people may find it easier to pick up, others may have to work harder to improve. But with practice and determination, anyone can become proficient at playing the piano (we really believe this - from experience!)

A good piano teacher can guide and support you in developing your skills, regardless of your starting point.
