Your child makes visible progress week by week — and actually looks forward to lessons. You (as an adult student) play the piece you've wanted to learn for years. Your exam candidate walks out knowing they were fully prepared — not just on the pieces, but on sightreading, scales and aural tests too.

There is no set age for children as every child develops at their own pace. Generally from the age of 5 or 6, when the fine motor skills and attention span are developed enough.
For adults, there is no upper limit. We've had successful students start in their in their 70s.
A: No — though we do teach it, as it greatly expands what you can play. It opens the world of Classical piano to students though. It also opens up the ABRSM exams route, which gives a great structure also recognised by schools and (from Grade 6) universities too. Some students prefer to learn by ear or use chord charts, and we can accommodate that.
A: Learning to play the piano can take different amounts of time for different people. For some, it might take a few months to learn the basics, like how to sit and hold their hands on the piano. For others, it might take longer. But with lots of practice and good lessons, you can get better and better at playing the piano. It can take a while to learn how to play songs that are more difficult, but with time and practice, you'll get there!
Try to figure out if the child is interested and motivated to learn. It is also important to find a qualified and experienced piano teacher who can tailor lessons to the child's individual needs and learning style.
It's also very important to establish a regular practice routine (4-5 days a week) and to reinforce practice points from lessons as much as possible.
Technique, scales, pieces, music theory, sightreading and ear training — tailored to your level and goals. Exam candidates receive specific ABRSM preparation including all three components of the exam.
No. With consistent practice, anyone can reach a solid level of proficiency on the piano. It's an instrument that really responds to regular practice, done well. A good teacher makes the difference — and that's exactly what we focus on.
Not before your first lesson. Once lessons begin, you'll need a digital piano with weighted keys — available secondhand from around £150. We're happy to advise on models.
